ABOUT TARTU

City of Good Thoughts

ABOUT CITY

Tartu, the second largest city in Estonia, is a university town and a city of youth. Lying on the banks of the River Emajõgi, Tartu is a modern city with a rich historical heritage and culture.

Tartu is the intellectual capital of Estonia and it is where national awareness and Estonian culture were born.

Be ready for crisp winter weather when you visit Tartu during the Miss Valentine competition which is always held in February. Fortunately there are plenty of cozy cafés and restaurants, as well as great spas and swimming pools, where you can forget about the cold outside. Take a walk around the town hall square (Raekojaplats) to discover the special flair of this lovely university town.

If this is your first time in Tartu, we recommend taking a taxi to get to your destination. Most taxi drivers speak some English and Russian and all taxis are equipped with meters. The prices are also reasonable. As you become more familiar with the city you will discover that many places are in easy walking distance.
